A friendly reading buddy, with you in charge

Your child reads aloud to a trained volunteer coach over video, one sentence at a time. You create the account, book each session, and stay nearby while they read.

How a session works

  1. Step 1

    Set up your reader

Create a reader profile with a nickname, an avatar, and a reading level. That's all we ask about your child.

  2. Step 2

    Book a time

Pick a 20-minute slot from our volunteers' open times. You'll get an email confirmation and reminders.

  3. Step 3

    Join together

At session time, open Janagram on a tablet or computer, confirm you're nearby, and join the video call.

  4. Step 4

    Read and celebrate

A sentence appears in big letters. Your child reads it aloud, and their coach helps with tricky words and moves on when they've got it.

Six reading levels

Pick by what looks right, not by age. You can change the level anytime before a session.

  • Level 1

    Seedling

3–4 word sentences with short-vowel words and top sight words.

    The cat is big.

  • Level 2

    Sprout

5–6 words with blends and digraphs like sh, ch, and st.

Chad and Seth shop for fish.

  • Level 3

    Sapling

6–8 words with long vowels and silent e.

Kate rode her bike home at noon.

  • Level 4

    Branch

8–10 words with two-syllable words and simple punctuation.

My sister found a rabbit hiding in the garden.

  • Level 5

    Tree

10–14 words with longer words and dialogue.

“Let’s build a spaceship,” said Maya, dragging an enormous cardboard box.

  • Level 6

    Forest

Short passages of two or three sentences.

The wind pushed the little boat across the lake. Ben held the rope tight.

What you'll need

  • A tablet or computer

With a camera and microphone. Tablets work great.

  • A quiet spot

Somewhere your child can hear their coach and focus on the words.

  • A grown-up nearby

You confirm you're present at the start of every session.
