Safety & privacy
How we keep readers safe
Adults and children on video together is serious, so safety shapes every part of Janagram. Here's exactly how it works.
Janagram is preparing for its first sessions. No reading session will take place until every protection on this page is in place.
Parents are in charge
- Only a parent or guardian can create an account. Children never sign up on their own.
- You give consent before we create any reader profile for your child.
- You book every session, and you confirm you're nearby when each one starts.
- You can join the video call at any time.
We collect as little as possible about children
For each reader we store only:
- A first name or nickname
- An avatar they pick
- Their reading level and progress
- Their birth year, not their full date of birth
We never ask for a child's last name, school, location, photo, or email address. Children don't have their own logins or contact details.
Every volunteer is vetted
Before a volunteer can post a single time slot, they must complete all of these:
- Be 18 or older and verify their identity
- Pass a background check
- Complete our training on coaching and child safety
- Sign our code of conduct
- Be approved by a member of our team
No private channels
- There is no chat, direct messaging, or file sharing between volunteers and readers.
- Volunteers never see a parent's email address or phone number.
- Volunteers see only a reader's nickname, avatar, and reading level.
- All contact happens inside sessions booked through Janagram.
Sessions happen only as booked
- Each session gets its own private video room, created just for that booking.
- Only the booked volunteer, reader, and parent can join, and the room closes when the session ends.
- With consent from both families and volunteers, sessions are recorded. Recordings are reviewed only if a safety concern comes up and are deleted automatically after a fixed period.
Reporting and response
- A report button is visible to parents, readers, and volunteers during and after every session.
- Reports go straight to our team, who aim to review them the same day.
- We can end any live session and suspend a volunteer immediately.
Children's privacy
Janagram is designed to follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We get a parent's consent before collecting any information about a child under 13, and parents can review or delete their child's information at any time.
